For three decades after the Civil War, the small regular Army fought a long series of campaigns against Native American nations across the Great Plains, the Southwest and the Pacific Northwest. Cavalry and infantry troopers — including Buffalo Soldiers of the Black 9th and 10th Cavalry and 24th and 25th Infantry regiments — earned medals for engagements that were often small, remote and fierce.

The list also includes Indian Scouts who served with the Army, among them Apache and Seminole-Negro scouts. Several awards from this era, particularly those connected with the 1890 Wounded Knee Massacre, have long been the subject of public debate.
