Sergeant Samuel Henry Craig, a soldier in the U.S. Army, received the Medal of Honor for gallantry on May 15, 1886 in Santa Cruz Mountains, Mexico during the Indian Campaigns. At the time he was serving with Company D, 4th U.S. Cavalry. Craig was 22 years old.
The medal was presented on April 27, 1887. He later rose to the rank of First Sergeant.
Craig was born on October 31, 1863 in New Market, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. His Medal of Honor is credited to Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Craig died on June 1, 1929 in Kittery, Maine, at the age of 65. He is buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Saco, Maine.
Craig is one of 426 Medal of Honor recipients from the Indian Campaigns and one of 210 credited to Illinois.
