During the Second Samoan Civil War, American and British sailors and Marines went ashore on Upolu to protect their nations’ interests. On April 1, 1899, an Anglo-American patrol was ambushed near Apia, and the men who covered the withdrawal of their comrades were recognized with the Medal of Honor.
