Resistance to the American occupation of Haiti flared again in 1919. Disguised as insurgents, Marine Sergeant Herman Hanneken and Corporal William Button slipped into a Caco camp on the night of October 31–November 1, 1919, and killed the rebel leader Charlemagne Péralte; both received the Medal of Honor.
