Corporal James Dowling was a soldier in the U.S. Army who received the Medal of Honor for his actions between August 13 and October 31, 1868 vicinity of the Black Mountains, Arizona during the Indian Campaigns. At the time he was serving with Company B, 8th U.S. Cavalry. Dowling was about 22 years old.
30 other service members also received the Medal of Honor for actions on the same day. The medal was presented on July 24, 1869. He later rose to the rank of Sergeant.
Dowling was born in August 1846 in County Meath, Ireland — one of 258 recipients born in Ireland. His Medal of Honor is credited to Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Dowling died on December 26, 1891 in Washington, District of Columbia, at the age of about 45. He is buried at Soldier's Home National Cemetery in Washington, District of Columbia.
