The United States occupied Haiti in 1915 after a period of violent political upheaval, and Marines soon clashed with Caco insurgents in the country’s mountainous north.
Two Marines earned their second Medals of Honor in this campaign: Gunnery Sergeant Dan Daly, for a night action near Fort Liberté in October 1915, and Major Smedley Butler, for the assault on Fort Rivière on November 17, 1915.
