U.S. Marines served in Nicaragua from 1927 to 1933 during a civil war and the insurgency led by Augusto Sandino. In January 1928, First Lieutenant Christian Schilt flew ten round trips in a Corsair biplane into the besieged village of Quilalí, landing on a makeshift street airstrip under fire to evacuate wounded Marines.
