In the summer of 1900, the anti-foreign Boxer movement and Chinese imperial troops besieged the foreign legations in Peking (Beijing). U.S. Marines and sailors helped hold the legation quarter for 55 days until an international relief expedition fought its way inland from the coast in August 1900.
Among the recipients is Private Dan Daly, credited with defending a position on the Tartar Wall alone through a night of attacks — the first of his two Medals of Honor.
