During the Battle of Mogadishu on October 3, 1993, Delta Force snipers Master Sergeant Gary Gordon and Sergeant First Class Randall Shughart volunteered to be inserted at the crash site of a downed Black Hawk helicopter to protect its critically injured crew from a closing crowd of armed militia.
Both men were killed. Their posthumous awards were the first Medals of Honor since the Vietnam War.
