Operation Iraqi Freedom began in March 2003. The Medals of Honor from Iraq include the first of the global war on terrorism, awarded posthumously to Sergeant First Class Paul R. Smith, and later awards for the street fighting in Fallujah and for the 2015 rescue of hostages held by ISIS.
