Machinist First Class Burke Hanford was a sailor in the U.S. Navy who received the Medal of Honor for his actions between June 20 and 22, 1900 in China during the Boxer Rebellion. At the time he was serving with U.S.S. Newark. Hanford was 27 years old.
27 other service members also received the Medal of Honor for actions on the same day. He later rose to the rank of Chief Machinist.
Hanford was born on December 17, 1872 in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio. His Medal of Honor is credited to Ohio. Hanford died on April 11, 1928, at the age of 55. He is buried at Greenwood Memorial Park in San Diego, California.
Hanford is one of 59 Medal of Honor recipients from the Boxer Rebellion and one of 256 credited to Ohio.
