Corporal Nicholas Meaher, a soldier in the U.S. Army, received the Medal of Honor for gallantry on October 20, 1869 in Chiricahua Mountains, Arizona Territory during the Indian Campaigns. At the time he was serving with Company G, 1st U.S. Cavalry. Meaher was about 24 years old.
32 other service members also received the Medal of Honor for actions on the same day. The medal was presented on December 20, 1869. He later rose to the rank of Sergeant.
Meaher was born in 1845 in Perry County, Ohio. His Medal of Honor is credited to Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. Meaher died on June 26, 1916 in Boise, Idaho, at the age of about 71. He is buried at Jordan Valley Cemetery in Jordan Valley, Oregon. Records also list him as Maher, Nicholas.
