Corporal David A. Matthews was a soldier in the U.S. Army who received the Medal of Honor for his actions on August 22, 1868 vicinity of the Black Mountains, Arizona during the Indian Campaigns. At the time he was serving with Company E, 8th U.S. Cavalry. Matthews was 21 years old.
11 other service members also received the Medal of Honor for actions on the same day. The medal was presented on September 6, 1869. He later rose to the rank of First Sergeant.
Matthews was born on March 7, 1847 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. Matthews died on September 12, 1923, at the age of 76. He is buried at St. John's Cemetery in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Matthews is one of 426 Medal of Honor recipients from the Indian Campaigns and one of 265 credited to Massachusetts.
