Private Robert Smith, a soldier in the U.S. Army, received the Medal of Honor for gallantry on September 9, 1876 in Slim Buttes, Montana during the Indian Campaigns. At the time he was serving with Company M, 3d U.S. Cavalry. Smith was about 25 years old.
One other service member also received the Medal of Honor for actions on the same day. The medal was presented on October 16, 1877.
Smith was born in 1851 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. Smith died on January 5, 1930 in Elko, Nevada, at the age of about 79. He is buried at Old City Cemetery in Elko, Nevada. Records also list him as Reynolds, Harry.
Smith is one of 426 Medal of Honor recipients from the Indian Campaigns and one of 380 credited to Pennsylvania.
