Sergeant Levi Shoemaker was a soldier in the U.S. Army who received the Medal of Honor for his actions on November 12, 1864 in Nineveh, Virginia during the Civil War. At the time he was serving with Company A, 1st West Virginia Cavalry. Shoemaker was 24 years old.
One other service member also received the Medal of Honor for actions on the same day. The medal was presented on November 26, 1864.
Shoemaker was born on June 25, 1840 in Monongalia County, West Virginia. His Medal of Honor is credited to Clarksburg, Harrison County, West Virginia. Shoemaker died on April 3, 1917 in Morgantown, West Virginia, at the age of 76. He is buried at East Oak Grove Cemetery in Morgantown, West Virginia. Records also list him as Shomaker, Levi.
Shoemaker is one of 1,525 Medal of Honor recipients from the Civil War and one of 45 credited to West Virginia.
