Farrier William H. Jones, a soldier in the U.S. Army, received the Medal of Honor for gallantry between May 7 and August 20, 1877 at Little Muddy Creek & Camas Meadows, Montana & Idaho during the Indian Campaigns. At the time he was serving with Company L, 2d U.S. Cavalry. Jones was about 28 years old.
3 other service members also received the Medal of Honor for actions on the same day. The medal was presented on February 28, 1878. He later rose to the rank of Blacksmith.
Jones was born in 1849 in Davidson County, North Carolina. His Medal of Honor is credited to Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky. Jones died on December 23, 1911, at the age of about 62. He is buried at Efland Methodist Church Cemetery in Efland, North Carolina.
Jones is one of 426 Medal of Honor recipients from the Indian Campaigns and one of 44 credited to Kentucky.
