Serving as a soldier in the U.S. Army, Private Owen McGar received the Medal of Honor for his actions on October 21, 1876 at Cedar Creek, etc., Montana during the Indian Campaigns. At the time he was serving with Company C, 5th U.S. Infantry. McGar was about 25 years old.
29 other service members also received the Medal of Honor for actions on the same day. The medal was presented on April 27, 1877.
McGar was born in 1851 in North Attleboro, Bristol County, Massachusetts. His Medal of Honor is credited to Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island. McGar died on October 2, 1921 in Massachusetts, at the age of about 70. He is buried at St. Mary's Cemetery in North Attleboro, Massachusetts. Records also list him as Dolan, Owen McGar.
