Anderson was born on November 13, 1839 in Decatur County, Indiana. His Medal of Honor is credited to Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana. Anderson died on February 7, 1904 in Glencarlyn, Virginia, at the age of 64. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
