Sloan was born in 1835 in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. His Medal of Honor is credited to Colesburg, Delaware County, Iowa. Sloan died in 1875 in Colesburg, Iowa, at the age of about 40. He is buried at Platt Cemetery in Colesburg, Iowa.
