Serving as a soldier in the U.S. Army, Private Lewis Morgan was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously for his actions on May 12, 1864 in Spotsylvania, Virginia during the Civil War. At the time he was serving with Company I, 4th Ohio Infantry. Morgan was about 28 years old.

Morgan was born in 1836 in Delaware County, Ohio. Morgan died on October 27, 1864 in Hatchers Run, Virginia, at the age of about 28. He is buried at Poplar Grove National Cemetery in Petersburg, Virginia.
Morgan is one of 1,525 Medal of Honor recipients from the Civil War and one of 256 credited to Ohio.
