Corporal John Kyle was a soldier in the U.S. Army who received the Medal of Honor for his actions on July 8, 1869 at Republican River, Kansas during the Indian Campaigns. At the time he was serving with Company M, 5th U.S. Cavalry. Kyle was about 23 years old.
One other service member also received the Medal of Honor for actions on the same day. The medal was presented on August 24, 1869.
Kyle was born in 1846 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. His Medal of Honor is credited to Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee. Kyle died on July 18, 1870 in Fort Hays, Kansas, at the age of about 24. He is buried at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Records also list him as John Kile.
Kyle is one of 426 Medal of Honor recipients from the Indian Campaigns and one of 33 credited to Tennessee.
