Rodenburg was born in 1851 in Germany — one of 130 recipients born in Germany. His Medal of Honor is credited to Fort Leavenworth, Leavenworth County, Kansas. Rodenburg died on December 13, 1899 in Fort Columbus, New York, at the age of about 48. He is buried at Cypress Hills National Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.
