Serving as a soldier in the U.S. Army, First Lieutenant Charles Frederic Humphrey received the Medal of Honor for his actions on July 11, 1877 in Clearwater, Idaho during the Indian Campaigns. At the time he was serving with 4th U.S. Artillery. Humphrey was 32 years old.
The medal was presented on March 2, 1897, 19 years after the action. He later rose to the rank of Major General.
Humphrey was born on September 2, 1844 in Cortland, Cortland County, New York. His Medal of Honor is credited to Buffalo, Erie County, New York. Humphrey died on June 4, 1926 in Washington, District of Columbia, at the age of 81. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
Humphrey is one of 426 Medal of Honor recipients from the Indian Campaigns and one of 678 credited to New York.

Voluntarily and successfully conducted, in the face of a withering fire, a party which recovered possession of an abandoned howitzer and two Gatling guns lying between the lines a few yards from the Indians.
