Serving as a soldier in the U.S. Army, Lieutenant Colonel William Remsburg Grove received the Medal of Honor for his actions on September 9, 1899 near Porac, Luzon, Philippine Islands during the Philippine Insurrection. At the time he was serving with 36th Infantry, U.S. Volunteers. Grove was 27 years old.

One other service member also received the Medal of Honor for actions on the same day. The medal was presented on July 16, 1902, 2 years after the action. He later rose to the rank of Colonel.

Grove was born on May 16, 1872 in Montezuma, Poweshiek County, Iowa. His Medal of Honor is credited to Denver, Denver County, Colorado. Grove died on August 6, 1952 in Sarasota, Florida, at the age of 80. He is buried at Manasota Memorial Park in Bradenton, Florida.

Biography

William Remsburg Grove (May 16, 1872 – August 6, 1952) was an American soldier who received the Medal of Honor. During the Philippine–American War, he charged against a group of rebels and assisted his commanding officer (J. Franklin Bell) in killing or capturing all of them while armed with only a pistol. For this he was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1902.
