Corporal Leander Taylor Herron, a soldier in the U.S. Army, received the Medal of Honor for gallantry on September 2, 1868 at Fort Dodge, Kansas during the Indian Campaigns. At the time he was serving with Company A, 3d U.S. Infantry. Herron was 21 years old.
Herron was born on December 29, 1846 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. His Medal of Honor is credited to Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Herron died on April 5, 1937 in St. Paul, Nebraska, at the age of 90. He is buried at Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul, Nebraska.
Herron is one of 426 Medal of Honor recipients from the Indian Campaigns and one of 380 credited to Pennsylvania.

While detailed as mail courier from the fort, voluntarily went to the assistance of a party of four enlisted men, who were attacked by about 50 Indians at some distance from the fort and remained with them until the party was relieved.
