Nolan was born on January 20, 1857 in Elkhart, Elkhart County, Indiana. His Medal of Honor is credited to South Bend, St. Joseph County, Indiana. Nolan died on August 19, 1921 in Niles, Michigan, at the age of 64. He is buried at Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles, Michigan.
Nolan is one of 82 Medal of Honor recipients from the Philippine Insurrection and one of 75 credited to Indiana.
