Serving as a soldier in the U.S. Army, Private John Baxter Kinne received the Medal of Honor for his actions on May 16, 1899 near San Isidro, Luzon, Philippine Islands during the Philippine Insurrection. At the time he was serving with Company B, 1st North Dakota Volunteer Infantry. Kinne was 21 years old.
6 other service members also received the Medal of Honor for actions on the same day. The medal was presented on May 17, 1906, 7 years after the action. He later rose to the rank of Captain, U.S. Medical Corps in WWI.
Kinne was born on October 3, 1877 in Beloit, Rock County, Wisconsin. His Medal of Honor is credited to Fargo, Cass County, North Dakota. Kinne died on June 19, 1943, at the age of 65. He is buried at Fern Hill Cemetery in Aberdeen, Washington.
