Second Lieutenant Ira Clinton Welborn, a soldier in the U.S. Army, received the Medal of Honor for gallantry on July 2, 1898 in Santiago, Cuba during the Spanish-American War. At the time he was serving with 9th U.S. Infantry. Welborn was 24 years old.
The medal was presented on June 21, 1899. He later rose to the rank of Colonel.
Welborn was born on February 13, 1874 in Mico, Jones County, Mississippi. Welborn died on July 13, 1956, at the age of 82. He is buried at Biloxi National Cemetery in Biloxi, Mississippi. His medal is held by West Point Museum (1896 & 1904 designs), West Point, NY.
Welborn is one of 110 Medal of Honor recipients from the Spanish-American War and one of 18 credited to Mississippi.
