Serving as a soldier in the U.S. Army, Sergeant George Grant received the Medal of Honor for his actions in February 1867 in Ft. Phil Kearny to Ft. C. F. Smith, Dakota Territory during the Indian Campaigns. At the time he was serving with Company E, 18th U.S. Infantry. Grant was about 33 years old.
The medal was presented on May 6, 1871, 4 years after the action.
Grant was born in 1834 in Raleigh, Shelby County, Tennessee. His Medal of Honor is credited to Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. Grant died on September 1, 1876, at the age of about 42. He is buried at Arbor Cemetery in Stockville, Nebraska.
Grant is one of 426 Medal of Honor recipients from the Indian Campaigns and one of 75 credited to Indiana.
