Serving as a soldier in the U.S. Army, Sergeant Emanuel Stance received the Medal of Honor for his actions on May 20, 1870 at Kickapoo Springs, Texas during the Indian Campaigns. At the time he was serving with Company F, 9th U.S. Cavalry. Stance was about 27 years old.
The medal was presented on June 28, 1870. He later rose to the rank of First Sergeant.
Stance was born in 1843 in Carroll Parish, Louisiana. His Medal of Honor is credited to East Carroll Parish, Louisiana. Stance died on December 25, 1887 in Fort Robinson, Nebraska, at the age of about 44. He is buried at Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell, Nebraska.
Stance is one of 426 Medal of Honor recipients from the Indian Campaigns and one of 24 credited to Louisiana.
