Corporal Edward (edwin) van Winkle was a soldier in the U.S. Army who received the Medal of Honor for his actions on September 29, 1864 at Chapin's Farm, Virginia during the Civil War. At the time he was serving with Company C, 148th New York Infantry. van Winkle was about 25 years old.
37 other service members also received the Medal of Honor for actions on the same day. The medal was presented on April 6, 1865. He later rose to the rank of Sergeant.
van Winkle was born in 1839 in Phelps, Ontario County, New York. van Winkle died on July 30, 1891, at the age of about 52. He is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Battle Creek, Michigan.

Edward Van Winkle (c. 1839 – July 30, 1891) was an American soldier who fought in the Union Army during the American Civil War and was a recipient of the Medal of Honor. Also known as Edwin, he was born in Phelps, New York. He fought as Corporal in the 148th New York Volunteer Infantry. He earned his medal on September 29, 1864, at the Battle of Chaffin's Farm, Virginia. He is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Battle Creek, Michigan.
