Smith was born on November 1, 1827 in Hollis, York County, Maine. His Medal of Honor is credited to Eastport, Washington County, Maine. Smith died on July 17, 1902 in Washington, District of Columbia, at the age of 74. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
