First Sergeant Squire Edward Howard, a soldier in the U.S. Army, received the Medal of Honor for gallantry on January 14, 1863 in Bayou Teche, Louisiana during the Civil War. At the time he was serving with Company H, 8th Vermont Infantry. Howard was 22 years old.

The medal was presented on January 29, 1894, 31 years after the action. He later rose to the rank of Captain.

Howard was born on May 15, 1840 in Jamaica, Windham County, Vermont. His Medal of Honor is credited to Townshend, Windham County, Vermont. Howard died on November 26, 1912 in West Newton, Massachusetts, at the age of 72. He is buried at Newton Center Cemetery in Newton Center, Massachusetts.
