First Lieutenant Nineveh S. McKeen, a soldier in the U.S. Army, received the Medal of Honor for gallantry on June 25, 1863 at Stone River & Liberty Gap, Tennessee during the Civil War. At the time he was serving with Company H, 21st Illinois Infantry. McKeen was about 26 years old.
One other service member also received the Medal of Honor for actions on the same day. The medal was presented on June 23, 1890, 26 years after the action. He later rose to the rank of Brevet Major.
McKeen was born in 1837 in Marshall, Clark County, Illinois. McKeen died on December 22, 1890 in Collinsville, Illinois, at the age of about 53. He is buried at Glenwood Cemetery in Collinsville, Illinois.
McKeen is one of 1,525 Medal of Honor recipients from the Civil War and one of 210 credited to Illinois.
