Private Louis J. Bruner, a soldier in the U.S. Army, received the Medal of Honor for gallantry on December 2, 1863 at Walker's Ford, Tennessee during the Civil War. At the time he was serving with Company H, 5th Indiana Cavalry. Bruner was 20 years old.
The medal was presented on March 9, 1896, 32 years after the action. He later rose to the rank of Quartermaster Sergeant.
Bruner was born on October 6, 1843 in Monroe County, Indiana. His Medal of Honor is credited to Clifty Brumer, Indiana. Bruner died on January 28, 1912 in Portland, Indiana, at the age of 68. He is buried at Green Park Cemetery in Portland, Indiana. His medal is held by Indiana War Memorials, Indianapolis, IN.
