Seaman John Handran was a sailor in the U.S. Navy who received the Medal of Honor for his actions on January 9, 1876 in Lisbon, Portugal — a peacetime act of courage recognized in the Interim 1871 - 1899 period. At the time he was serving with U.S.S. Franklin. Handran was about 24 years old.
One other service member also received the Medal of Honor for actions on the same day.
Handran was born in 1852 in Massachusetts. Handran died on December 26, 1885 in at sea (Atlantic Ocean), at the age of about 33. He was buried at sea.

For gallant conduct while serving on board the U.S.S. Franklin at Lisbon, Portugal, 9 January 1876. Jumping overboard, Handran rescued from drowning one of the crew of that vessel.
