Private John Fitzgerald was a Marine in the U.S. Marine Corps who received the Medal of Honor for his actions on June 14, 1898 in Cuzco, Cuba during the Spanish-American War. Fitzgerald was 25 years old.
One other service member also received the Medal of Honor for actions on the same day. He later rose to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant.
Fitzgerald was born on March 17, 1873 in Limerick, Ireland — one of 258 recipients born in Ireland. His Medal of Honor is credited to New York. Fitzgerald died on April 19, 1948 in Brookyn, New York, at the age of 75. He is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.
