Serving as a soldier in the U.S. Army, Assistant Surgeon James Robb Church received the Medal of Honor for his actions on June 24, 1898 in Las Guasimas, Cuba during the Spanish-American War. At the time he was serving with 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry. Church was about 32 years old.
The medal was presented on January 10, 1906, 7 years after the action — the White House, presented by Pres. Theodore Roosevelt. He later rose to the rank of Colonel.
Church was born in 1866 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. His Medal of Honor is credited to Washington, District of Columbia. Church died on August 28, 1923 in Washington, District of Columbia, at the age of about 57. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
Church is one of 110 Medal of Honor recipients from the Spanish-American War and one of 34 credited to District of Columbia.

Biography
James Robb Church (January 1, 1866 – May 18, 1923) was a United States Army Assistant Surgeon who received the Medal of Honor for his actions as part of the Rough Riders regiment during the Spanish–American War. He also served in World War I, and wrote about the effects of poison gas and his experiences as a wartime doctor.
