Gause was born on December 9, 1843 in Trumbull County, Ohio. His Medal of Honor is credited to Canfield, Mahoning County, Ohio. Gause died on April 23, 1920 in Johnson City, Tennessee, at the age of 76. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
