Sergeant Horace Capron Jr. was a soldier in the U.S. Army who was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously for his actions in June 1862 in Chickahominy & Ashland, Virginia during the Civil War. At the time he was serving with Company G, 8th Illinois Cavalry. Capron was about 22 years old.
The medal was presented on September 27, 1865, 3 years after the action. He later rose to the rank of First Lieutenant.
Capron was born in 1840 in Laurel, Prince George's County, Maryland. His Medal of Honor is credited to Peoria, Peoria County, Illinois. Capron died on February 6, 1864 in North Carolina, at the age of about 24. He is buried at Springdale Cemetery in Peoria, Illinois.
Capron is one of 1,525 Medal of Honor recipients from the Civil War and one of 210 credited to Illinois.
