Private George Mathews Shelton was a soldier in the U.S. Army who received the Medal of Honor for his actions on April 26, 1900 in La Paz, Leyte, Philippine Islands during the Philippine Insurrection. At the time he was serving with Company I, 23d U.S. Infantry. Shelton was 22 years old.
The medal was presented on March 10, 1902. He later rose to the rank of Major.
Shelton was born on December 23, 1877 in Brownwood, Brown County, Texas. His Medal of Honor is credited to Bellington, Limestone County, Texas. Shelton died on January 18, 1949 in Presidio of San Francisco, California, at the age of 71. He is buried at San Francisco National Cemetery in San Francisco, California.
Shelton is one of 82 Medal of Honor recipients from the Philippine Insurrection and one of 78 credited to Texas.

George Matthew Shelton (December 23, 1877 – January 18, 1949) was a soldier in the United States Army and a Medal of Honor recipient for his actions in the Philippine–American War. Shelton joined the Army from Billington, Texas in May 1898, and retired with the rank of Major in September 1921.
