Private Frank M. Whitman was a soldier in the U.S. Army who received the Medal of Honor for his actions on September 17, 1862 in Antietam, Maryland during the Civil War. At the time he was serving with Company G, 35th Massachusetts Infantry. Whitman was 23 years old.
18 other service members also received the Medal of Honor for actions on the same day. The medal was presented on February 21, 1874, 11 years after the action. He later rose to the rank of Sergeant.
Whitman was born on September 30, 1838 in Woodstock, Oxford County, Maine. His Medal of Honor is credited to Ayersville, Massachusetts. Whitman died on July 9, 1918 in Boston, Massachusetts, at the age of 79. He is buried at Riverview Cemetery in Groveland, Massachusetts.
