Captain Frank Dwight Baldwin, a soldier in the U.S. Army, received the Medal of Honor for gallantry on July 12, 1864 at Peach Tree Creek, Georgia during the Civil War. At the time he was serving with Company D, 19th Michigan Infantry. Baldwin was 22 years old.

One other service member also received the Medal of Honor for actions on the same day. The medal was presented on December 3, 1891, 27 years after the action. He later rose to the rank of Major General. Baldwin is one of the few people to receive the Medal of Honor twice; see his other award (November 8, 1874).

Baldwin was born on June 26, 1842 in Manchester, Washtenaw County, Michigan. His Medal of Honor is credited to Constantine, St. Joseph County, Michigan. Baldwin died on April 22, 1923, at the age of 80. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.

Baldwin is one of 1,525 Medal of Honor recipients from the Civil War and one of 112 credited to Michigan.

First Award Led his company in a countercharge at Peach Tree Creek, Ga., 12 July 1864, under a galling fire ahead of his own men, and singly entered the enemy's line, capturing and bringing back two commissioned officers, fully armed, besides a guidon of a Georgia regiment.

Biography

Frank Dwight Baldwin (June 26, 1842 – April 22, 1923), a resident of Constantine, Michigan, and born in Manchester, Michigan, is one of only 19 servicemen to receive the Medal of Honor twice. Baldwin received his first award for his actions during the Atlanta Campaign where he led his company in battle at Peachtree Creek and captured two commissioned officers in the American Civil War. He received his second for conspicuous bravery in 1874 during the Indian Wars. Baldwin holds the distinction of being a recipient of the Medal of Honor in different conflicts. He also fought in the Philippines during the Spanish–American War and rose to the rank of major general before retiring.
