Sergeant Charles D. Marquette, a soldier in the U.S. Army, received the Medal of Honor for gallantry on April 2, 1865 in Petersburg, Virginia during the Civil War. At the time he was serving with Company F, 93d Pennsylvania Infantry. Marquette was 20 years old.

Note on Sergeant Marquette's Medal of Honor citation: In the 1978 official publication of the Medal of Honor Roll by the U.S. Defense Department, Sergeant Marquette's Medal of Honor citation read "Sgt. Marquette, although wounded, was one of the first to plant colors on the enemy's breastworks." It is believed this was an error because every previous printing of the Roll and Marquette's recommendation from his commanding officer all read "Capture of flag." Unfortunately, the error was repeated in subsequent publications. We have corrected the citation to its historic, original version.
