Serving as a soldier in the U.S. Army, Second Lieutenant Allen James Greer received the Medal of Honor for his actions on July 2, 1901 near Majada, Laguna Province, Luzon, Philippine Islands during the Philippine Insurrection. At the time he was serving with 4th U.S. Infantry. Greer was 22 years old.
The medal was presented on March 10, 1902. He later rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Greer was born on August 11, 1878 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee. Greer died on March 16, 1964, at the age of 85. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
Greer is one of 82 Medal of Honor recipients from the Philippine Insurrection and one of 33 credited to Tennessee.
