The Coast Guard traces its origin to the Revenue Cutter Service created on August 4, 1790. Only one Coast Guardsman has received the Medal of Honor: Signalman First Class Douglas Munro, who was killed on Guadalcanal on September 27, 1942 while shielding Marines being evacuated from a beach with his landing craft.
